Get creative with i.materialise and Tinkercad
At the 3D Printshow in London past weekend, i.materialise hosted a workshop together with Tinkercad, the easy to use 3D design web app. First, Tinkercad’s Technical Artist Pekka showed a packed workshop room how to design a saw shaped alligator wrench. Second, I showcased all possible 3D printing materials and finishes, and more importantly how to get your designs 3D printed through i.materialise.
For those of you who didn’t get their hands dirty during the hands-on workshop, we have some good news. Pekka has made the contents of the workshop available on Tinkercad as a ‘Lesson’. A lesson shows you step-by-step how to create your own handy little tool from scratch!
Or if you’re already in love with this cool gadget, you can just buy it in our gallery.

Who is (y)our Business Developer
Hi all
Although I did some –very occasional- blog posts here, my colleague Tatiana asked me (many times already) to also ‘officially’ introduce myself. My name is Martijn, 30 years old. I work on i.materialise business development. My days are filled with exploring and shaping new products, collaborations and partnerships.
I Live in Antwerp (great city -but unfortunately- far away from Materialise). They say people from Antwerp are very ‘chauvinistic’. I don’t think I am, but we did create a vase once based on the logo of the city and presented it. We never got it back : )
I studied Product development at the academy of Antwerp – and followed an additional year in product Innovation. It feels like a long time ago. But fun it was.
I started working at Materialise, in the –hold on- ‘Rapid prototyping and manufacturing software department’ as the first business developer. Shortly after, the 3Dprinting virus bit me and we started looking into new ideas/products & market. Especia
Newsflash: High detailed stainless steel (HS) has entered the building!
It’s all in the details. With high detailed stainless steel (HS), you can go wild with your designs. We tested the materials for a few weeks now and it looks pretty stunning. You can situate the material between silver and titanium. It’s pretty much as strong as titanium, but more shiny and mostly less expensive. Towards silver it’s less shiny but stronger. So if you’re looking for alternatives with a very high detailed standard: this could be the one!
For weeks we were (and are) excited to finally tell you the news and give you, as a designer, more -detailed- options. Wim, even did a test on rust: he put a high detailed stainless steel design in a bath with salt and no marks of rust are visible. We can’t wait to discover what you’ll design with this material!
We’re still waiting to put HS on our material page: we will let you try, play and test the material until the end of the year and see whether the material is worth to have its own place on our material page. We
Back to school Meetup: new faces, new ideas!
What an exciting meeting we had last Friday; We saw some familiar faces, but most of them were new, coming from Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.
CURIOUS
Although the group was very quiet in the beginning – which is normal, since they didn’t know each other- after the i.materialise presentation everyone started to socialize. While checking out the materials and asking our support engineers questions about material strength, cost and so on some were really glad to show projects they were working on. Other people didn’t have any experience in 3D printing at all, but were curious about the whole process and were thinking about working with 3D modelers for their jewelry design or other objects.
ACTION
Next on the program was the tour through the Materialise buildings. People are always very excited to see a few of the 72 printers in action and hear interesting 3D printing stories. It gives a good view on the in-house machines and production. It’s always funny to see how
Luigi Vaghi and Miel Wellens win our Urban Nomad contest!
We saw many nice entries, but of course only one per category can win. After the votes of Flanders DC and our team were counted we selected the best entries . Miel Wellens and Luigi Vaghi are the winners of the challenge!
Miel Wellens was really pushing himself to the limit in this challenge; we received four designs and each single one was very popular amongst the jury members. He is the big winner of this competition; he wins his 3D prints ‘Pencilery’ and ‘Paperspin’ in the categories stainless steel and polyamide, besides that we will showcast his design at the festival of creativity. I think these two items need a little explanation. The designer invented a new word, especially for this design, namely: pencilery = pencils + cutlery!
Why this fits in the theme? Wellens: “Even on the road you want to eat with descent forks or knives (instead of the crappy plastic ones), so that’s how I came up with this easy solution. They also fit at the back of pencils, for those creative peop
Meet the designer: Dario Scapitta
Growing up in a family full of designers, Dario Scapitta was destined to be a designer himself. Nowadays he’s experimenting with 3D printing and tries to find his way in the industry.
When did you start being interested in design?
<< Well, I was born in Valenza, the capital of the Italian jewellery business. Since I was young I heard about jewellery designers and goldsmiths, because my parents and my brother are all working in the jewellery business. So jewellery design is in my blood. Later on with my studies and my experiences I’ve learned how to become a designer myself. >>
How would you describe your style?
<< It is very difficult for me to describe my style, and probably it is also too early to talk about it. I’m always working on something that I like very much; I’m constantly inspired by nature, fashion, art, architecture and everything else that surrounds me. Every day I find new things or ideas to transform in a piece of jewellery. I like to be simple and original and

12 Yale students rebuild ancient Rome in gold for the Venice Biennale
Ancient Rome has always inspired people, but now 12 Yale Students and their professor have really surprised everyone with their project. They succeeded in making a 3D printed display, based on the 250 years old etchings of Piranesi, completely covered with gold leaves.
Amazed by 6 etchings of ancient Rome from mapmaker and architect Giovanni Battista Piranesi, twelve students of Yale and their professor decided to bring the project to life. It looked quite impossible in the beginning, but with the help of Materialise the students were able to create a maquette with the 250 year old etchings of Piranesi.
SHINE
The students first had to reinvent the etchings through three-dimensional digital modeling. Then the biggest printer, the Mammoth Stereolithography machine, printed the models. With its amazing size, measuring 1500 x 1300 x 90 mm, the project needed something extra to shine at the Biennale in Venice. So they came up with an idea: why not cover it with gold leaves? The art
Facebook/Forum Challenge: Ferran Bruguera and Els Cuvelier win a voucher of 250 euro!
It was a tough race, but Ferran Bruguera could convince the jury with his nice project Moosca. Els Cuvelier on the other hand won the hearts of the people on Facebook with her ring Woman.
As soon as the pictures were on Facebook; people started linking and liking and liking…After a very exciting start, it became clear Els Cuvelier her ring Woman was winning the race, she ended the challenge with 173 likes.
For the forum we, the i.materialise team, was in charge of the votes. Since the votes were so diverse, we ended up with a shortlist on which we voted again: Boxing ring, Heart of Time, Lumi-Girl with the Caged Dress, Moosca, Custom Wedding ring and Julia vase. But, although it was very close, ofcourse there can only be one winner and thats……………..MOOSCA! We found the story very interesting and congratulate him with his great project and hope to see much more about him in the future.
The superhero Moosca will conquer more hearts in the future.
