Event Recap: Highlights from the Bay Area Maker Faire 2014!

The Bay Area Maker Faire came to a close on May 18th, but also opened many new possibilities and friendships! As a two-year veteran of the largest Maker Faire in the United States, the i.materialise community outreach team came ready to connect with the hundreds of makers who visited our booth! We’re glad that so many of you enjoyed playing with our chainmail armor samples, 3D printed metals and “moving part” designs. Thanks for visiting our booth! Connecting with you was the best part of our day. Here are some highlights from the Bay Area Maker Faire in San Mateo.

Temporary Shipping Cost Glitch Resolved

We’re glad to inform you that the issue concerning outrageous shipping costs has been fixed. This morning, shipping prices were restored to normal. All parties impacted by the glitch will be contacted.

As some of you have noticed, these past days we have been facing an issue with the pricing mechanism which links us to UPS. We automatically retrieve our shipping prices from the UPS web service and due to a glitch in the system we have been getting incorrect quotes – resulting in prices that are much higher than they should be.

For the moment, we have created a patch to fix this glitch in the UPS system but we are also investigating the issue further and are currently awaiting a longer-term solution from UPS.

We apologize for any inconvenience caused and thank you for understanding. Happy New Year!

Tutorial Thursday: stand out from the crowd!

There are so many artists and designers out there that it’s hard to stand out from the crowd. But nothing is impossible: follow our tips and tricks.

Marketing yourself is hard work, but if you’re a designer and you want to make a living, it’s a necessity. There are so many ways to put yourself in the spotlights, but it’s very important to come up with your own personal plan that suits your style.

1. Start networking
If you’re just starting to expand your network, there is one simple rule: start spreading your news in familiar places. Contact friends and family, use your social networks like Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or  Google +.
Go step by step. Try to get in contact with interesting people through the people in your personal network.

2. Seduce bloggers (or seduce us)
It’s very important to make a good impression. Start simple by making good pictures and visuals of your project (see our previous tutorial to make your pictures tip-top). Do you have a a design with mo

Featured Friday: Showing your 3D prints

Happy Friday everyone! Check out our latest gallery entries.

Paul Marx customized the bust of Richelieu with a 3D scan of his fathers face. He created the design in natural white polyamide.

This beautiful vase is 3D printed in ceramics by Printopi. The design is inspired by Gustav Adamis in the early 1980s and printed in ocean turquoise.
We love 3D printing because it creates a perfect environment for makers, just like Jan Dewever. He created cufflinks for his son and personalized it by adding the letters of his name. Dewever: “Since this was my first 3D printing experiment I printed them in polyamide with a blue dye finish. For me the test was so succesful that I will also have them printed in high detailed stainless steel for sure.
Don’t forget to put you’re own design in the gallery, maybe you will be the next one featured on the blog?
