Bay Area Maker Faire recap in a word: Awesome

We just got back from the Bay Area Maker Faire over the weekend and wanted to share some highlights with you. This was our first time at the Maker Faire here in the US and it was simply incredible. There were so many people excited to learn about 3D printing and what we do, that we had a constant flow of people in the booth. And we loved getting to meet so many great people, explain our services, and talk about all the cool things that are going on in the 3D printing industry. So thanks to each and every one of you for stopping by.

Our weekend started with a notice of a delayed shipment. Oh no! But we had some samples on hand and made the best of it. And it didn’t stop people from coming by to ask about our services, either. With some quick thinking and a bit of help from @FedExHelp on Twitter, we managed to locate the shipment and get someone out to retrieve it.

So by Sunday, we were back in business. And we had so much great stuff to show everyone! To see our entire booth, take

Tinkercad is back-and it’s free!

Tinkercad is back-and it’s free!

Together with so many others we were really disappointed when Tinkercad announced it’s shut down. Deep down we hoped someone would acquire and save Tinkercad.

And it happened! Autodesk signed a deal to acquire Tinkercad and blow new life into the platform. The official announcement sounds really promising for many makers:

“The shutdown plan has been rolled back and effective immediately new users are again able to sign up for the site. Even better, at the request of Autodesk, we have supercharged the free plan. You can now create unlimited designs, all import and export functionality is enabled and ShapeScripts are turned on for free accounts. We have automatically upgraded all existing free accounts to this new powerful plan. This account will be offered for a limited time only so make sure you sign up as soon as possible.

Before signing the deal we spent a lot of time talking to Autodesk engineers and product people about their vision for Tinkercad. We were impressed by the

Maker Faire update

We’re here at the Bay Area Maker Faire, about 3/4 of the way through the day. It has been GREAT to see all of you who have stopped by so far. Franky was on the Autodesk “Future of 3D Printing” panel, which had some really good questions and answers about future 3D materials, current experimentation with materials, and where the industry is headed.

If you’ve gone by our booth, you may notice that we didn’t quite have all of our promised demos. Unfortunately, we had some delays in getting our items here on time (due a variety of factors beyond our control). We do still have material samples, though, and we’ll continue to be at the booth the rest of the evening and all day Sunday. (We’re working on getting our display pieces before Sunday morning and will update you if we will have additional items in the booth tomorrow.)

In addition, we are still doing our meet-up tonight at The Swingin’ Door here in San Mateo. So if you’re in the area, join us from 8-10 pm for a closer look at som

Stop by the i.materialise booth at Maker Faire

The Bay Area Maker Faire is rapidly approaching. We’re busy getting together some awesome things for our booth, so you’ll have plenty to look at (and do!) when you stop by!

So what WILL you find at the i.materialise booth? Well, we have the widest range of materials from which to print your awesome designs. We’ll have samples of a variety of materials so you can check them out in person and see exactly how great our print quality is.

In addition to our material samples, we’ll have some items that showcase the many ways you can use our 3D printing services to make some pretty cool things. Like the Bioscope by Jon Stam and Simon de Bakker. Now this just takes me right back to being a kid and I can’t wait to play with it. (I promise I’ll share, though.)

And this super 3D printed hat by Elvis Pompilio & .Rad Product (who has worked with Madonna, no less).

And even an art piece, called The Groomer, by Eric van Straaten that you really have to see in person to believe the level o

Prime Gray for your smooth, detailed designs!

We’ve had so much compliments about this material that we couldn’t wait any longer to feature Prime Gray in our Material Monday!

We’ve seen so many nice designs since we introducced the material in June 2011. The freedom of design is limited (due to the support structure during printing), so most people use it for decorative models, prototypes, character models and scaled train or tram models.

Or what do you think about these cute helmets, designed by MinificCustomsIn3d?

The thing we love about the designs we see is not only the designs but also the way people finish their models. A lot of community members love to paint the designs, like this model from Sven-Åke Grufstedt. But make sure to check out other painted designs from Guido Mandorf or Volkmar Meier to name some.

PRICE
Prime gray costs 1,55€ per cubic centimeter (plus a 5€ handling cost per model). For each extra copy of your model you order, the handlingcost gradually drops from 5€ to
