Materials » Multicolor

Models made out of multicolor are constructed from a fine granular powder. Multicolor is the only material that offers full color models at a good price. We recommend this material for demo models exclusively. The surface has a sandy, granular look.

Pricing info

Models with a volume less than 40 cm³ cost 0.55 EUR/cm³ plus a startup of 8 EUR/model. As of a volume of 40 cm³, models cost 0.6 EUR/cm³ plus a startup of 6 EUR/model.

If you order 2 or more identical designs, the startup cost becomes 5€/model.

Typical use

Multicolor can be used for models with more than one color, which don’t need to be functional. The technique allows a lot of freedom in design. Typically, these are models you put on your desk or on a shelf such as architectural scale models, figures, and awards.

Z Corp printing technology is used to build your design with this material. The printer builds up the model from bottom to top, layer by layer. A roller puts a thin layer of powder on a platform and a print head places tiny drops of glue at specific locations, printing a thin layer of your model. The platform lowers and the roller spreads another layer of powder. Coloring is done by combining 4 different pre-colored glues to match the color requested. After the printing process the model is brittle, but is strengthened by putting it into superglue. A UV coating is sprayed on it to prevent de-coloration by sunlight.

Additional information

  • A vivid, multicolor model is so much more appealing than a single color model. Since 3D software packages are more frequently outputting multicolor models, multicolor is a great choice to make.
  • The model needs to be handled with care. Even after reinforcing the model with superglue, the model stays fragile, and has problems absorbing shocks.
  • Take into account that the walls of your model need to be 1.5 to 2 mm thick and the details of imprints can be 0.5 to 0.8 mm. Long tiny features like pins, thin fingers, tiny hair points or antennas that are 0.8 to 1.5 mm and that stick out might not survive.
  • The surface is granular but smoothed thanks to the UV coating.
