The Materialise World Conference is quickly approaching! Therefore, we would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to some of the inspiring speakers who will illustrate the many ways that 3D Printing services and solutions can add value in the realm of consumer products. See them in person on April 24th and 25th in Belgium, and participate in our two-day program full of workshops and lectures that will give you inspiration and the technical know-how to turn your ideas into 3D-printed reality.

This week, our featured presenter is Caroline Das, co-founder of 3D-printed accessory fashion label DAMN.

Caroline Das is a young but irrepressible architect who discovered a passion for fusing architecture and fashion during a study abroad program in Milan. After completing her Master of Architecture in 2004, she began her career, from designing fashion boutiques in the Netherlands up to developing the interior design and identity for a brand new Chinese jeans label and rolling it out in Shanghai.

In 2009, she headed over to San Francisco, where she specialized in graphic design and soaked up the Bay Area’s world of start-ups, innovation and entrepreneurship. Inspired by her time abroad, the reborn architect returned to Belgium, predestined to design objects with long-term friend and fellow creative mind Kim Nivelle. It would become a cocktail of fresh ideas, friendship and dedication. Driven by the desire to expand their boundaries, the duo founded DAMN in 2011.

DAMN brought them to explore 3D Printing in a unique way: “We were architects, not jewelry designers, but we knew how to design in 3D.” On top of that, the companions decided not to neglect a population group so often ignored in accessory design: DAMN focuses mostly on male accessories and aims to add a “feel-good” touch to menswear.

Caroline & Kim approach their designs with a clear nod to their architectural background. The light-hearted and refined inventiveness that comes out in their design process often leads to new and challenging discoveries. They like to play games with the perception of the obvious like giving classic accessories such as the pocket square a contemporary twist. “DAMN”, the expression they both say with awe and amazement each time a new creation pops up, is the key word that describes the feeling they want to create with their objects.
