This week in 3D printing: 29th of January – 4th of February 2011

January 30th. 3DTin is on Makezine. 3DTin is basically “lego like” 3D modeling tool in the browser whose designs can be exported for 3D printing. Also, if you”ve heard of Minecraft you should take to this. By limiting us to making things in blocks 3DTin does limit what we can make with the tool. But, because of this limitation we are able to create things. 3DTin and its brethrenwill be very sucessful. How do I know? Because the Makerbot put out this lengthy and wonderful article out and a a few days later had a follow up with more tips.  I”ll show you some test 3D prints of 3DTin things as soon as I get to it.

Feb. 2nd. Iris van Herpen”s 3D printed fashion collection is featured on FastCo and many news and fashion blogs worldwide.

Feb. 3rd. NeoMetrix to Display 3D Scanning & 3D Printing Solutions at MD&M Show in Orlando, FL. If that sounds like a press release it is because it is. I quote, “a  great opportunity to introduce the benefits of 3D scanning and

i.materialise on Karrewiet

Karrewiet is a Belgian children”s television show and i.materialise and our mother company Materialise were featured on the January 28th edition of the show. The segment is very short but you can see an intrpid kid reporter interview Miranda and get her drawing turned into a 3D print. You also see some fleeting images of the i.materialise and .MGX offices (and a shot of the kid reporter sitting on the KOL/MAC Root chair.

The best thing though is that the intrepid kid reporter is none other than Hanne. Her father is Wim, i.materialise”s head of production. You can watch the video here in Dutch, the episode is the 28th of January and the 3D printing segment starts at 3:40.

The Year of 2010 in 3D Printing: An Overview

To my abject horror there was no “year in review” for 3D printing. I decided to right this wrong and produce this one. I’ve tried to be as unbiased and inclusive as possible. If I’ve missed something, feel free to point it out in the comments and I’ll add it. 2010 was a miraculous year in 3D printing. Thousands of people have bought and made RepRaps and Makerbots en tens of thousands use 3D printing services such as i.materialise to 3D print their own creations. (more…)

3D Printing the Individualized Appear Lamp

Introducing the individualized Appear Lamp.

The Appear Lamp holds a secret. Your secret. Once you turn it on, it reveals itself.

You can individualize your own appear lamp with your very own hidden message. You can play with the different fonts and see how your lamp will look online here.

The lamp costs $99 ($19 including shipping to the States) and comes complete with light, fitting and stand. The lamp comes in both a European and US version. The Appear Lamp is 3D printed in polyamide and manufactured with care in Belgium.

What will you reveal? Will it be a message for a loved one? A joke? A surprise? Explore your creativity with the Appear.

We would like to thank the team at .MGX for all their help with the engineering of the Appear and for letting us build on their ten years of expertise in 3D printed lighting. You can find more images of the Appear Lamp on Flickr.

5 Amazing full sized furniture pieces made with 3D printing

3D printing seems to be all over the media lately. I already mentioned it in my previous blog post ”FULL PRINT3D”, but everyone writing these articles seems to be showing only a glimpse of what the technology is capable of. So why not write a series of blog posts to show the versatility of 3D printing? That’s what I thought. I’d like to start with the subject of furniture because I believe 3D printing is taking furniture design to a whole other level. Just ask French designer Patrick Jouin, who actually created the first large scale scale furniture pieces through 3D printing technology together with. MGX. It’s no surprise Materialise’s big mammoth stereolithography 3D printers had something to do with it. Here are, in no particular order, 5 amazing furniture piece made with 3D printing.

3D print an entire coffee table in one piece

Check out the video to see how we 3D print an entire coffee table in one piece.

The Module by design label .MGX, designed by celebrated designers WertelOberfell–Platform is printed in one piece our Stratasys FDM (Fused Deposition Modeling) machines. The coffee table is based on fractal growth patterns in trees and designed specifically to minimize waste. Individual Module coffee tables can be intertwined in order to get just the size of table you need.

The machine used in the video is the Stratasys FDM Maxum, one of the largest 3D printers in existence with a build volume of 600 by 500 by 600 mm. I hope the video does the scale of the thing justice, I could sit in it if I dared.

Our parent company Materialise has the largest FDM capacity in the world outside Stratasys itself. We have over 20 FDM systems, the majority of them the huge Maxum machines. The FDM production people are also currently trying to be patient while they wait for capacity to increase yet again so t

Patrick Jouin: La substance du design

From February 17 until May 24, 2010, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will present a retrospective of the work of Patrick Jouin. The retrospective includes the Solid Collection and the One_Shot.MGX collapsable stool, produced via revolutionary .MGX 3D printing techniques.

In addition, Patrick Jouin”s latest creation with .MGX will be unveiled. Inspired by both the One_Shot.MGX stool and flower blossoms found in nature, his new lamp features a shade which collapses and expands to release or contain light. As with the One_Shot.MGX, the shade is printed as a single piece, including hinges that in one simple movement, transform the shade from a bud to a blossom.

Parallellepipeda

Last night, the official opening of Parallellepipeda took place at the new M museum in Leuven, Belgium. What happens when art and science meet? That was the point of departure when the Parallellepipeda research project was setup in 2007. For three years, eminent artists and scientists from K.U. Leuven and elsewhere opened their worlds to one another and discovered unknown worlds of inspiration. The results of all this can now be seen in the Parallellepipeda exhibition. (more…)
