Designer Portrait: How Industrial Designer Elise Luttik Uses 3D Printing for Interior Design Objects
Industrial Designer Elise Luttik from Amsterdam, founder of design studio eli5e, creates stunning interior design objects, product designs, and furniture. From Polyamide to Ceramics and Transparent Resin, she has created various gadgets and decor items with the help of 3D printing. For our latest video interview, we met up with Elise to learn more about the passion that drives her.
Elise likes playful designs with a twist that make people think twice before using an item – and that make them smile. Her inspiration to start using 3D printing came to her at the SXSW Conference in Austin, Texas: “I see 3D printing as a sustainable driver for my design studio. I think it is great that as a start-up you get the opportunity to develop high-quality products without the need for big investments.”
The Dutch designer finds most of her inspiration for new designs while traveling, and always carries her sketchbook with her in case something catches her eye. “I get inspiration during my trips abroad. Foreign cultures inspire me to change my view on daily matters. I always carry my little sketchbook with me, so whenever an idea pops up, I make sure to write it down or draw a quick sketch,” she told us.
With her design studio eli5e, she turned her dream into reality and is now working as a full-time product designer. According to Elise, 3D printing her designs has brought several advantages: it has made it easier to for her ideas to become tangible, made it easier to share and tweak her designs, and has really given her the energy to start a career as a professional designer. She says “I think 3D printing gives lots of freedom compared to the more traditional mass production methods.”
Additionally, 3D printing comes in handy when time is of the essence – it enables her to receive prototypes – but also end products – faster than with traditional manufacturing methods: “With 3D printing, it is even possible to show an entire ceramic selection at a fair without needing a single mold. So it really helps to save time”.
Elise’s ambition is to grow her design studio and to continue developing new design collections with a twist based on the newest technological developments. You can learn more about her designs and her brand on Elise’s website.
