Patrick Jouin: La substance du design
From February 17 until May 24, 2010, the Centre Pompidou in Paris will present a retrospective of the work of Patrick Jouin. The retrospective includes the Solid Collection and the One_Shot.MGX collapsable stool, produced via revolutionary .MGX 3D printing techniques.
In addition, Patrick Jouin”s latest creation with .MGX will be unveiled. Inspired by both the One_Shot.MGX stool and flower blossoms found in nature, his new lamp features a shade which collapses and expands to release or contain light. As with the One_Shot.MGX, the shade is printed as a single piece, including hinges that in one simple movement, transform the shade from a bud to a blossom.
The One_Shot.MGX was launched to tremendous success at the Salone Del Mobile Milan in April 2006. It was the first time in history that a kinetic, integrated, functional design piece had been produced in a single, non-assembled unit. This functional piece of furniture, including all moving parts, was made in polyamide with the 3D printing technology known as Selective Laser Sintering.
The stool emerges from the machine in its final and complete form. The hinges are integrated in the 3D structure and built in one go, in one piece with no need for assembly – hence the name, One_Shot.MGX.
By simply pusing down on the center handle, the piece untwists into its functional form.
Born in 1967, Patrick Jouin is one of the major protagonists of contemporary design on the French and international scene. Since 1999, his Parisian agency has distinguished itself by the diversity of its activities: construction design, architecture, industrial design, handicraft, scenographies, and street furniture.
It”s estimated, that on a typical day of walking around Paris, one encounters a Patrick Jouin design every 350 metres. He has contributed over 46,000 designs to the urban landscape.
