i.materialise Student Discount

UPDATE: This post is from 2011. Click here for the latest promo code for students!

Last year we noticed a spike in orders in April through July from design and engineering students worldwide who 3D printed concept cars, architectural models, functional models of prototypes and all sorts of other things with us. We really liked working on those projects (despite all the last minute stresses some of you had) and would like to encourage more students to 3D print with us.

If you’re a student at a College or University and want to use 3D printing for a school related project we”re giving you a 20% discount if you 3D print with us. We”re especially interested in Design Academy Students (Eindhoven, Finland etc.) & Engineering and product design graduates. But, feel free to wow us with any work from any discipline.

Free shipping on orders above $99

We”ve looked at the results of our free shipping experiment over the past few weeks. The results were very encouraging and lead to an increase of orders from faraway places. In light of this we”re now offering you free shipping on any and all orders that are more than $99 or 99 Euro depending on which currency you pay us in. We like the fact that we can make it cheaper for you to order from us and can now get your goods, concept models, lamps, book ends and all the other awesomeness for less. We hope this encourages you to make more things with us and let more of your creations to stream in for us to make.

We know that many people would like to also have free shipping on orders below $99. At the moment we”re not ready to do this. There is a lot of handling involved with small parts and this drives up their cost and overal costs. It will be easier for us to control costs and lower overal prices in the long term if we concentrate on stimulating  you to make larger pieces. In

The Periodic Table of Materials

Last week we introduced our redesigned website and mentioned ”The Periodic Table of Materials”. Obviously, we were inspired by Dmitri Mendeleev and we figured something similar would be a nice way to present our 3D printing materials to you. Considering the fact we have a bunch of new materials available and will offer them in the future, we knew it would be easy to extend the table over time.

At the same time, we put a lot of effort into making detailed information pages about each material. This should help you find the material that best suits your needs as a designer or inventor.

So, we’ve described all the materials, made some sample pictures, collected information about coloring options, thought about the typical use of a certain material, and created videos about different 3D printing technologies. For steel and titanium we wrote design guides to get you on the right track. And we did even more, but we”d rather let you discover that for yourself.

Improvements to customer service and feedback

Hi all I”m Karen,

I”m in charge of making sure that we help you in any way we can in getting your idea 3D printed. Together with the launch of the new website we have also improved our support pages. We hope that this lets us capture more feedback, ideas and suggestions from you and that we can translate this into better service. Our aim is to give you the best customer service possible while making it easier and easier for you to 3D print.

We also want to share knowledge so you can post your questions, idea, problem,…here using Get Satisfaction.

i.materialise site redesign

Today we launched the first version of our new site. In the coming weeks more updates will follow. We”ve updated the look and feel of the site and hope you like the results. The most important thing is that we”re going to give your stories and your designs a much more central place in the website. We want to emphasize that we as a company are a factory for your ideas. Your creativity as a designer, inventor or artist coupled with our 3D printing prowess leads to the expression of your idea in an object. This object could be a keepsake, a Design Academy graduation project, an invention, a jewel, an art piece or a product meant for sale. For each object we will use all our skill, years of experience and equipment to create the most accurate representation of your idea that we can. We will treat each file and each 3D printed object with care and take the time to give you the advice you need. And to show the world what your idea and design skill and our manufacturing leads to

Free Shipping trial

Over the past months we’ve been actively looking for your feedback. We’ve used the information to improve our site and to come up with new ideas for the future. One of the suggestions we received several times was that we would have more orders if we offered free shipping. Currently we have a “perfect” pricing system. With this system we calculate the correct price for every part. We do this want to be fair and exact. With free shipping, in the final analysis everyone will be subsiding the New Zealanders. So intuitively this has felt “off” to us. But, if customers and community members continue to tell you that this would lead to more orders we’d be stupid not to try it.

So for the next four weeks we are offering free shipping on all orders, anywhere. After the four weeks we will analyze the costs and look at if this increases our orders and makes you happier. We will also then revisit this test with our community and ask you what you thought about it. If the numbers add up

This week in 3D printing: 29th of January – 4th of February 2011

January 30th. 3DTin is on Makezine. 3DTin is basically “lego like” 3D modeling tool in the browser whose designs can be exported for 3D printing. Also, if you”ve heard of Minecraft you should take to this. By limiting us to making things in blocks 3DTin does limit what we can make with the tool. But, because of this limitation we are able to create things. 3DTin and its brethrenwill be very sucessful. How do I know? Because the Makerbot put out this lengthy and wonderful article out and a a few days later had a follow up with more tips.  I”ll show you some test 3D prints of 3DTin things as soon as I get to it.

Who is (y)our Business Process Manager?

My name is Wim Verstraeten. Consider me a battle scarred veteran in the field of the online ordering of 3d printed models. I date back from the era where Materialise was the only firm to have an online 3D printing service with its NextDay service which was started in 1997. I’m talking about the time when only the happy few had a mobile phone and Amazon and eBay had existed for almost 4 years.

I started in 1999, when I walked into the Materialise office to offer my services. I was intrigued by Magics Communicator, a free online collaboration tool for 3d models. At that time online video meetings were not free and broadband usage was expensive. Magics Communicator helped people to discuss and visualize their project, allowing them to instantly see the operations of their communication partner on the 3D model.

It was that tool that I upgraded to interact with the renewed NextDay Service internet website. Later on I converted the NextDay service to what we now know as OnSit

i.materialise on Karrewiet

Karrewiet is a Belgian children”s television show and i.materialise and our mother company Materialise were featured on the January 28th edition of the show. The segment is very short but you can see an intrpid kid reporter interview Miranda and get her drawing turned into a 3D print. You also see some fleeting images of the i.materialise and .MGX offices (and a shot of the kid reporter sitting on the KOL/MAC Root chair.

The best thing though is that the intrepid kid reporter is none other than Hanne. Her father is Wim, i.materialise”s head of production. You can watch the video here in Dutch, the episode is the 28th of January and the 3D printing segment starts at 3:40.
