I use laser scanning to create an STL mesh. 3D printing is just one door that STL meshes open. The other doors are x-y-z milling of large surfaces and even the "negative" of surface milling to make the molds needed for cast stone. 3D scanning is allowing the design process to start with something tangible and even amazing - not a blank sheet of paper.
