Description

00 gauge, 4mm/foot, 1:76 scale.

This locomotive body has been designed to fit the older type of Hornby B12 chassis with minor modifications. However, those fitted with X03 or X04 motors will need the motors replacing as they are too tall.

History

The London and North Western Railway (LNWR) Prince of Wales Class was an express 4-6-0 introduced in 1911 by Charles Bowen-Cooke and was effectively, a superheated version of the earlier Experiment Class.

A total of 245 were built, (135 were built at Crewe between 1911 and 1919), 20 by North British Locomotive Company between 1915–1916 and 90 by William Beardmore & Co. between 1921–1924). Since the LNWR reused names and numbers from withdrawn locomotives, their initial numbering was completely haphazard.

At grouping in 1923, all passed to the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) who gave them the power classification 3P and renumbered them between 5600–5844. The last built by Beardmore in February 1924 who displayed it at the British Empire Exhibition. It was later bought by the LMS and numbered it 5845.

Between 1934–1935 the class were again renumbered into the series 25600–25844 to make room for the new Stanier Jubilee class locomotives. Withdrawals started in 1933 as more modern 4-6-0s displaced them from their work and only only 22 remained at the outbreak of World War II.

Withdrawals recommenced in 1944, and only 6 were inherited by British Railways in 1948. In March 1948, the four remaining (25648 Queen of the Belgians, 25673 Lusitania, 25752 and 25787) were allocated numbers 58000–3, but were withdrawn before receiving them.

Liveries Included, LNWR black, LMS Crimson and later LMS black.

About the kit.

To complete the model you will need the following:

  • A Hornby B12 Chassis. (see notes above concerning X03 and X04 motors) minus the original chassis extension at the front and tender drawbar;
  • My own chassis extension available here (the original will not fit);
  • My Prince of Wales small parts print to supply front buffers, Safety Valve Cover and a Tender drawbar available here. The latter designed to couple to a Bachmann G2A tender)
  • A suitable tender (e.g. a Bachmann G2A tender);
  • Paint, Transfers, one or two whistles, name and number plates depending upon the prototype;
  • The slot in the bufferbeam is designed to accept a Smiths Screw Link Coupling.
