Description

High Definition Anatomical Model of Human Limbic System from MRI scan

This incredibly detailed model has been painstakingly coloured to show off all the structures of this most powerful and important part of human anatomy.  Ideal for students, teachers and those interested in neuroscience or psychology or as a wonderful sculpture to ponder.

  1. Thalamus:  Monitors incoming sight sound smell taste & touch.
  2. Hypothalamus:  Manages pituitary gland & hormones.
  3. Amygdala:  Emotional memory & freeze-fight-flight trigger.
  4. Hippocampus:  Episodic memory & forms new brain cells
  5. Hippocampal Gyrus:  Memory encoding and retrieval
  6. Fornix:  Hardwires 3 to 2 for hair-trigger hormone releases.
  7. Corpus Callous:  Connects left & right brain.
  8. Cingulate Gyrus:  Interface to & from thinking brain.
  9. Mammillary Bodies:  Manages spatial awareness & memory.
  10. Pineal Gland:  Regulates sleep by the release of melatonin

ABOUT THE LIMBIC SYSTEM

The brain has 3 primary structures:

The oldest is the stem (reptilian brain), the most modern is the cerebral cortex (human brain) and this structure, the limbic system (aka the mammalian brain).

All inbound stimuli, (everything we see, hear, touch, taste, and smell) goes into the limbic system before we act or react.  It's the source of spatial, episodic, and emotional memory management.  It drives our freeze-fight-flight response through the nervous system and pituitary gland.  It also manages the interface to the parts of the brain responsible for thinking, learning, listening, and moving.

I am a Behaviourist and Psychotherapist. I use this model to explain the neurology and psychology of human behaviour to individuals groups and teams. I have painstakingly edited the original MRI file to provide the distinctive colours which highlight each component of the human limbic system.
