Description

Iwahnary is a puzzle based on an idea by Iwahiro (Hirokazu Iwasawa). Iwahiro discovered an interaction pattern for an exponential puzzle as follows: 210-211, 021-022. This is shorthand for "a piece can move between states 0 and 1 when its two upper neighbours are in states 2 and 1, and a piece can move between states 1 and 2 when its two upper neighbours are in states 0 and 2". So each rotor piece can have three states: 0, 1 and 2. The rotors are placed on a hillside, and each rotor interacts with its two upper neighbours as described by the interaction pattern. Later, Iwahiro found another pattern with similar properties: 020-021, 001-002. Both patterns result in a "phinary" puzzle. That is, the number of moves to solve increases by a factor phi (golden ratio, 1.618) for each piece added. Surprisingly, whereas both patterns are "phinary", the latter requires many more moves to solve than the former.
