Saving production costs by merging parts - common practice?

Hi all,

I have a question regarding common practices on merging parts.

My situation: I have CAD-designed an enclosure for an electrical switch. This enclosure consists of the main body and a little lid. So in total thats two parts that I would need to order for production.

Now, when I order those parts separately as 3D-printed parts, both parts cost the same, although they differ a lot in complexity. My idea was, that it might be possible to CAD-construct those two parts as one, with little holding-bridges that I would remove after production to separate the parts again. With this I could save 50% of production cost which is a lot.
My question is whether this is a common practice. Have you heard of that?

Thank you, best, Jakob
