Polish and dyeing of large SLS polyimide parts

Hi,

I have a few large parts to print, the largest being 94 x 316 x 86.15 mm. I’ve used another company to print, polish and dye the parts with some success but they do not offer the range of finishing options or colours that iMaterialise does. The parts are all pretty chunky.

The print of the large parts is well within the limits of iMaterialise SLS tools, but outside the limits of the polishing and dyeing tools. I was wondering if I could “stretch” the process limits and accept any risk to quality as an experiment?

Ideally I’d actually like to try the satin finish (rather than just polished).

Is there any chance you’d be willing to give it a go?

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in our company. Unfortunately, as you have already read on our website, we do not offer these finishes for these dimensions in SLS. The reason is simple : the part does not fit in the machines we use. The only option we could offer your in a dyed color is : max dimensions 400 x 400 x 330 mm (dyed black), but without the polished or satin finish.

I hope I gave you enough information and if not, please do not hesitate to contact me again.

Have a nice day.

It’s just like boiling a potato sir, except you’re adding a fabric / nylon dye of your choice. Get yourself a metal bucket of choice, light a fire and you’re good to go. Check frequently and remove once you’ve got right colour. Perhaps do some trials with smaller things also. I used an old barrel during one project, worked a treat. Good luck.

Come to think of it, might it fit into a wok, if you have one?

Thanks very much! Yes I’ve tried dyeing before, mixed results where the colour wasn’t uniform. Actually I’m more interested in the vibro polishing… might have to look in to getting a big one!
