Last year, I saw report data from a geophysical optical televiewer survey and read some project public education posters. After, I was inspired to create a 3D digital sculpt. I imagined what the karst might look like based off this information. Then, I had this sculpture 3D printed (MJF Polyamide). Recently, I decided to approximate the geology strata by painting the model with a combination of Vallejo ground textures, environment pigments & acrylic paints. This proved to be a useful personal exploration of additive manufacture (i.e. 3D Printing) for natural formations, compared against traditional subtractive manufacturing methods, loss casting and so on. In this case, a large pinch of artist licence is inherent (I hold no professional qualifications in geology). However, I suspect, if so desired the geological karst dissolution could be computer predicted & simulated. This 3D simulation then 3D printed - if optimum authored fidelity is a primary goal.
