Cut thread in Alumide flane

Hi there,
in course of an Alumide flange print, I would like to get your experience if it is feasible to cut thread by my own after printing. The idea is to print only the core hole and then cut the thread by tap on my own.
The flange looks similar to the attached pic.

Thanks for your advices in advance
Dominik

Hello Dominik,

Thanks for reaching out to us with your request here.

Since we don’t offer such extra services at i.Materailise, it would be hard to predict the success of tapping threads into this material. Threads are thin, fine details that may not work out properly after being cut in. Printing them as a designed feature in the model may also be not successful because of low thickness and thus the functionality of threads can’t be assured.

Alumide as well as other powder-based materials result in somewhat porous structure of the model. The aluminum gives the material a matte look, but makes it more brittle than polyamide and this will surely affect threading. Tapping threads is possible altogether, but the outcome may not work as expected.

Ivan
