Description
Model of a Unity branded signal or parforce horn mouthpiece, intended to be very close to the original design. This is somewhat like the Benge 6 alto/tenor horn mouthpiece, and similar models.
This has a large shank, slightly larger than the 10mm shank tip outer diameter commonly designated German shank. In this case, the shank tip diameter is 0.4001" / 10.163mm.
The piece fit best in the oversized trumpet receiver of the Amati-Kraslice ABG-223 G/F bugle, M1892 field trumpet type. Like many alto/tenor horn mouthpieces, this greatly mellowed the ABG-223's sound, though pitch centering required more work. Interestingly, the printed version was easier to play in that regard.
The large shank doesn't insert well in many trumpet receivers, and the small throat compounds intonation problems caused by the deep cup and insertion issue. It could benefit from throat drill enlargement and/or shank shaving-narrowing.
The mouthpiece design resembles various post-World War II German brass instrument mouthpieces.
The exterior is similar to both Miraphone French horn and Dotzauer hunting horn [waldhorn] designs, and the "Germany" stamp is identical to that of Böhm Meinl mouthpieces of the time.
The "Unity" brand stamp used shares the character type set of the "Champion" made in Germany mouthpieces as well, so they might have a common origin.
Compared to the Dotzauer mouthpiece specification list, this seems closest to the 2W.
While the 2W has an approximate cup inner diameter of 18mm, throat diameter 4mm, and shank tip outer diameter 10mm, this Unity piece has inner diameter 18.31mm, throat 3.759mm, and shank tip outer diameter 10.163mm.
The internal dimensions are of the type for Fürst Pleß [Fuerst Pless] horns as well.
No dimensions have been adjusted or modified for printing or cutting. This model is intended for experimentation, with the price intended to defray scanning costs.
For verification, overall length is 71.29 mm / 2.807", and [greatest] outer diameter of 29.26 mm / 1.152".
Note that the shank opening is thin and fragile with resin prints.
