Rygo

The "Rygo" piece is algorithmic, computed rather than modelled; it's an example of mathematics driven by aesthetics. It starts with a gyroid, a triply periodic minimal surface, which is put through an inverse transformation. Each point, at a distance "d" from the origin, is moved to distance "1/d". This creates a curious involuted surface, with infinitely small curlicues near the zero point, spiralling larger and larger into the distance.

In response to the practical challenges of creating an infinitely small (and infinitely large) sculpture, I've clipped the inverted gyroid on the outside with an ellipsoid, and around the origin with a sphere, to form "Rygo".

I like it very much; it's a "found object" in the garden of mathematics.

The Rygo jewelry piece is also available in white, black, amber and burgundy.
